Leviticus Chapter 19

LEVITICUS

CHAPTER

19

1. The LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 2. Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them: You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verses 1 to 2)

As found in print black and white on the screen without any form of discrimination or exclusion, or exemption of any form, be it for the young or for the old, God is ordering us to be holy! One may argue that for humans this is an impossible task, however, God is God of both the possible and even of the impossible as we have witnessed throughout all these chapters since day 1 of the first chapter of the book of Genesis. Therefore, God, You would never give us such a commandment if You knew that this was impossible for us to reach, however along with this order You also gave us the power of the Holy Spirit which gives us the much-needed energy and motivation to overcome our sinful selves and live a life according to Your will. A practice that I found helpful is that of starting to opt for second place and not always for first place. When in a traffic jam I always try to give a priority to others even if the right of way is mine.

3. You shall each revere your mother and father, and you shall keep my sabbaths: I am the LORD your God.

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verse 3)

Oh God, You not only wish that we give our love and obedience to You my Father, but also, to our earthly father's who in the New Testament You taught us not to call fathers. Oh at times oh God it is very hard for me to strike the balance between my love for both father's for You love me so much but I cannot say the same for my earthly father who after a quarrel where I called him 'trash' was ready to take me to court.

4. Do not turn to idols or make cast images for yourselves: I am the LORD your God.

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verse 4)

Oh God nobody can ever take Your place. Although we try to occupy ourselves with hobbies and many forms of alienation, nobody or anything can compensate for You and Your presence.

5. When you offer a sacrifice of well-being to the LORD, offer it in such a way that is acceptable on your behalf. 6. It shall be eaten on the same day you offer it, or on the next day; and anything left over until the third day shall be consumed in fire. 7. If it is eaten at all on the third day, it is an abomination; it will not be acceptable.  8. All who eat it shall be subject to punishment, because they have profaned what is holy to the LORD; and any such person shall be cut off from the people.

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verses 5 to 8)

Oh God, I thank You for illuminating theologians and other prominent people in the Church who inspired by Your teachings in both the Old and New Testament define particular practice that are held as proper and sacred and cannot be violated. 9. When You reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest. 10. You shall not strip your vineyard bare, or gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the alien: I am the LORD your God.

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verses 9 to 10)

Oh God if we were to give a share of all our produce to those countries who are in a state of malnutrition and poverty the problem or situation would be catered for in abundance and there would still remain a surplus.  In view of this issue of abundance instead of waste please click on the following link:-

On the other hand, in order to give a holistic picture oh God, there are some of us on a volunteer basis who are doing the contrary of wasting food. Such people are reusing in a cafe, good excess food from bars and restaurants, that would have been thrown away, into bins. This is a very intelligent way of making good use of  Your providence instead of wasting it. For more details I invite you to click on the following link:-

11. You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; and you shall not lie to one another. 12. And you shall not swear falsely by my name, profaning the name of your God; I am the LORD.

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verses 11 to 12)

Oh God by giving us and Your people such wise rules You were setting the foundation stones of a new form of civilization having both a legal and moral structure or framework as guidance. May we always keep such values and norms in mind oh God and always remember that when we violate such norms we are putting in danger our very existence as spiritual and even social beings.

13. You shall not defraud your neighbor, you shall not steal, and you shall not keep for yourself the wages of a laborer until morning.

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verse 13)

Oh God if we could apply this verse to 2016 in relation to the employment of illegal immigrants the verse might read differently. There was a case that I witnessed when such a person after having worked on a building site met his employer who told him that he was not going to pay him for the youth had not really worked for him> In truth the person was still smeared with the dust of masonry from the building site where he had been working. This is an injustice that is not acceptable. A total injustice.

14. You shall not revile the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind; you shall fear your God: I am the LORD.

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verse 14)

Oh, Jesus how great is your love for us. Even though we place each other in classes according to our abilities and skills, You love us according to our weaknesses more than to our achievements. As found in verse 14 You order us to be of help to others who have different forms of impairment such as those referred to and even others not referred to. It is our responsibility to offer our help and services when and where required.

15. You shall not render an unjust judgment; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great with justice you shall judge your neighbor.

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verse 15)

If possible oh God it is best for us not to pass judgment at all on others, for we are all sinners and are therefore not in a position to pass judgment on others.

16. You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not profit by the blood of your neighbor: I am the LORD

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verse 16)

Oh God, how much I need to control my tongue which is a malicious tool but can also be a channel of love. Throughout the course of life, You have shown me that humans cannot be trusted with secrets or intimate issues, because when the right time, person or situation is at hand they, will spill the beans and secrets or personal issues will no longer be private and personal but common knowledge. As You know oh God I have trusted people many times at my own cost and have paid the price with interest. Today I learn to place my trust only in You.

17. You shall not hate in your heart anyone of your kin; you shall reprove your neighbor, or you will incur guilt yourself. 18. You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verses 17 to 18)

Oh God, this is one of the greatest issues of my life. my heart has been hurt by many people especially those that are of my inner circles that my first reaction is to become angry and feel hurt. Oh God, many times I have offered prayers to receive Your healing grace, and today I pray again for Your healing blessing. Every time I think that I have received Your healing, a situation crops ups for me to be tested by and I fail the test, which shows that I am not yet healed. I pray for the power to overcome my hurts and live in Your presence as a whole person. Help me to forgive with a sincere heart so that I can receive Your sincere healing. Amen.

19. You shall keep my statutes. You shall not let  your animals breed with a different kind; you shall not sow your field with two kinds of seed; nor shall you put on a garment made of two different materials.

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verse 19)

Oh God may You only be our only option when making our decisions. When it comes to choosing between Your ways and that of the world which are two different seeds, may we without hesitation choose the seeds of Your Holy Spirit.

20. If a man has had sexual relations with a woman who is a slave, designated for another man but not ransomed or given her freedom, an inquiry shall be held. They shall not be put to death, since she has not been freed; 21. but he shall bring a guilt offering for himself to the LORD, at the entrance of the tent of meeting, a ram as guilt offering. 22. And the priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of guilt offering before the LORD for his sin that he committed; and the sin that he committed shall be forgiven him.

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verses 20 to 22)

Oh God my Father I pray for all people especially women who have been used and abused, both physically, emotionally or even treated as slaves in their own homes by their husbands. I also pray for husbands who are being treated as slaves and even for others who are being verbally and emotionally abused by their wives as a consequence of past sins that have never been forgiven. Oh God the model that You established was that of one man for one woman and this model is not to be violated or else innocent people may be hurt in the process of infidelity.

23. When you come into the land and plant all kinds of trees for food, then you shall regard their fruit as forbidden, three years it shall be forbidden to you, it must not be eaten.

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verse 23)

Oh God even though Your people were to be allowed to enter and occupy the lands that You have promised them, they were still bound by obedience to You and Your Holy Name. The same applies to us oh God. When You bring us out of our situation of Egypt,

24. In the fourth year all their fruit shall be set apart for rejoicing in the LORD.

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verse 24)

Oh God my Father how nice it is to rejoice and have fun in You and with You as its focus and not according to the ways of the world. It is proper that our first produce or the satisfaction of our main goals are to be offered to You with an attitude of praise and thanksgiving for You are our sole provider and we are to be great full to You at all times.

25. But in the fifth year you may eat of their fruit, that their yield may be increased for you; I am the LORD your God.

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verse 25)

As in the case of Adam and Eve Your people and even us, are compelled to wait for the proper time before being able to benefit from Your blessings and material benefits. When the time is right Your blessings shall multiply in abundance. Amen. Until then we continue with our lives and place our trust in You. Amen.

26. You shall not eat anything with its blood. You shall not practice augury or witchcraft. 27. You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard. 28. You shall not make any gashes in your flesh for the dead or tattoo any marks upon you: I am the LORD.

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verses 26 to 28)

Oh God as found in many chapters of the book of Leviticus You have given us many rules which to follow and adhere to. I pray that  You continue to enlighten me which of them are still applicable for our times and culture. I would really like to follow and obey word for word, but some issues such as that of the beard or rounding of hair at the temples are not applicable for I do not have a beard or hair on my temples, however on reflecting with Your help I can refer to many issues found in this book and make several changes in my life, hair and beard are totally insignificant in my case in order to live a holy life.

29. Do not profane your daughter by making her a prostitute, that the land not become prostituted and full of depravity.

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verse 29)

Oh God, this is wise wisdom for all. We all complain that sin is on the increase, however if we focus on ourselves as a starting point, the world will be 1 percent clean of sin. Moreover, if we say that the faith of believers is not as it used to be, we can also start with ourselves, and then we can say that the faith has increased by 1 percent. Therefore, let us rise up and spread the message of God. We are the ones' who with God's help can make it happen. Amen.

30. You shall keep my sabbaths and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD.

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verse 30)

Oh God, what joy I feel in my heart when we meet on Sundays. I would really wish that we met more often. However, meet every day during prayer time, however, this is still not enough for me! I desire more of You, my God and Father.

31. Do not turn to mediums or wizards; do not seek hem out, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verse 31)

Oh God, such people have contact with evil spirits and one is greatly at risk when dealing with such delicate areas. Some people are using uiga boards in order to communicate with spirits, even young children are making use of such means. When clicking on the following link, you may share the traumatic experience that this youngster experienced when trying to communicate with spirits. Throughout this short clip, she repeated many times that she was scared. It is best to be careful when viewing this clip best to see it under supervision or after an adult has seen it in order to protect the well-being or not wet the appetite of such a minority group.

32. You shall rise before the aged, and defer to the old; and you shall fear your God: I am the LORD.

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verse 32)

Another important value that You wanted Your people to practice among themselves in which we are to imitate them is their respect for the elderly. We are to keep in mind that as people of this age we are reaping the fruits that our predecessors worked hard for and even risked their lives in the process. Therefore, instead of considering them as social rejects it is best to show them love, respect, and care. These people faced a difficult live and survived, we are living an easier life and are in a crisis. We have much to learn by being humble.

33. When an alien resides with you in your land, you shall not oppress the alien. 34. The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verse 33 to 34)

Oh God when we welcome asylum seekers in our lands we are also not to oppress them. Both parties are to respect each other along with their values, norms, culture and belief. The citizens are not to dominate the newcomers, however, the newcomers are to adapt according to the norms values and culture of the host island. One thing to keep in mind is that to this day we are hosting others, but it could be that one day we could also be refugees ourselves seeking asylum in another country. Moreover, as in the text when we were in a state of Egypt meaning a state of personal crisis, we all wished to find love care and support or even the shelter of others.

35. You shall not cheat in measuring length, weight or quantity. 36. You shall have honest balances, honest weights, an honest ephah, and an honest hin: I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. 37. You shall keep all my statutes and all my ordinances, and observe them: I am the LORD.

(Leviticus Chapter 19 verse 35 to 37)

Oh God today You are also giving us an important lesson. Among ourselves even in 2016, we are still being dishonest with each other. Terms and conditions are being both used and abused. The small print that many people cannot see is being used against the consumer when the appliance or service fails to continue, Insurance companies are not always being honest with their clients in the service that they give to them. Corporations on which we depend on, are not always correct in their billing systems so much that some of us were not refunded as they were due, or were billed unjustly.

Oh God I would like to end this chapter with the following prayer:

Oh God in chapter 19 you gave us a very good social contract which is totally fair. In Your dealings with us humans, you have clearly shown us what is according to Your will and what is truly not. However, our sinful nature is always in conflict and at war within us. It is only with the help of Your Holy Spirit that we can be free from the corruption of our sinful self. Thanks for renewing this social contract. I also pray for a spiritual renewal in the Roman Catholic Church so that our faith and spiritual batteries be charged once again.
